Bracing for busiest day of holiday shopping.

With just two days to go before Christmas, the country’s largest payment processor is gearing up for what’s expected to some of the busiest hours and days of the year.

Moneris Solutions is predicting Dec. 23 will once again be the biggest day of the year in terms of the number of times consumers swipe a credit or debit card to make a purchase.

The busiest hour, however, will fall on Dec. 24, between 1 and 2 p.m. the company predicts.

“We think it’ll exceed 400 transactions per second, almost double the average,” said Santo Ligotti, senior vice-president of marketing and communications at Moneris.

So far, spending this holiday season is up 2 per cent over last year, Moneris data for the latest five weeks of transactions reveals.

That’s below the Retail Council of Canada’s projected 3 to 5 per cent sales increase for merchants this season.
