2D Barcodes will see tremendous growth in 2011

The 2D mobile barcodes sector is expected to see tremendous growth in 2011 as more brands begin to realise the potential of the technology and more consumers are persuaded to try it out.

Brands such as McDonald’s, Procter & Gamble, the BBC and Vodafone have already used barcodes, which allow consumers instant access to information and interactive services via their mobile phones with no lengthy URLs.

The mobile barcodes, also known as QR codes due to the predominant symbology, tend to be embedded in a poster or press ad and consumers can activate them using the barcode reading application, which uses the camera in their mobile phones. Some phones now come with a built in barcode scanner although others require an app to be downloaded.
